New HP Exec Marten Mickos: "Who Wouldn't Want to Work for Meg?"

Eucalyptus Acquired by Hewlett Packard

"We are taking a big step," blogged Eucalyptus CEO Marten Mickos (pictured below) in annoncing that the open-source cloud infrastructure company was being acquired by HP.

"The world is shifting from legacy infrastructures to cloud, and everything is changing. Public cloud is driving a new design pattern for software, and data centers are becoming private clouds. In this disruptive change, the Eucalyptus team nurtures three big dreams that drive our behavior:

  1. Make open source win in cloud infrastructure

  2. Enable effortless application workload mobility between private and public clouds

  3. Deliver complete clouds"

We asked him the most compelling reason for the Eucalyptus team to agree to the acquisition and he quickly responded, telling us "There are many compelling things. We can start with their CEO. Who wouldn't want to work for Meg?"

He also called HP's cloud strategy "powerful" and said the company's "Cloud business unit is a stellar team."

Marten will be joining HP as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the company's cloud business, reporting directly to CEO Meg Whitman.

He recently talked to us in good spirits about how beer is similar to cloud computing, and in the acquisition announcement extended the metaphor to another beverage: "Just like you may brew your own coffee or go to a café to let someone else do it for you," he wrote, "you must be able to run your application workloads on your own hardware or on someone else's."

"That's what customers are telling us, and we are now seeing enterprises increasingly deploy their own clouds."

(Note: In the "beer" interview cited above, Marten was quite complimentary to OpenStack technology, if not the way it has been handled. Now, in heading the cloud efforts of an OpenStack supporter, it will be highly interesting to see how he, his team, and the company proceeds.)
